Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet
About
.xls is a binary spreadsheet format used by older versions of Microsoft Excel. It stores worksheets, formulas, charts, formatting, macros, and cell data in a proprietary binary structure. XLS remains supported today for compatibility with legacy documents.
History
The format is the legacy spreadsheet file type used by Microsoft Excel from Excel 2.0 (1987) through Excel 2003. XLS files are stored using the proprietary binary format known as BIFF (Binary Interchange File Format), and the file itself is wrapped in an OLE Compound File container. Before being replaced in 2007 by the XML-based format as part of the Office Open XML transition, XLS was the industry standard for spreadsheets in business, finance, and data processing.
